Fun in the Sun
Fun in the Sun

So The Russian and I just got back from the Jewel Dunn’s River Resort in Jamaica and I have finally lulled myself out of depression to write this post. It was wonderful! I’ve never been so disappointed to be back in Boston.

In the interest of saving money and spreading the word about the best ways to do so (also maybe to spark a little jealousy…), I will recount my travels with the world.

Ajax was SO PUMPED to have us back in the house to disturb his sleep with things like baths and cuddle time.

I bought the entire package on Cheapcarribean.com, a website I highly recommend to anyone trying to travel on a budget.  The four–night package included the resort (which itself was all–inclusive), round–trip airfare from both me and The Russian, round–trip airport transfers, and even a $50 spa credit all for a little over $2,000.  I think that is an awesome deal, considering the flights alone would have cost us around $1,200 round trip if we had bought them individually.

The only downside is that the website does not offer a wide variety of airlines, but we were still booked on an American Airlines flight, which is not my favorite airline but certainly not the worst (just as an aside, I have a highly irrational fear of flying that makes me very sensitive to the airline that  I choose).

Some specifics about the trip…

We left very early in the morning on Monday for the airport. I’m usually not a morning person (I hardly ever make it to my 8 a.m. class on time, no matter how hard I try or how many alarms I set).  That day, however, I jumped out of bed.

...and I did a happy dance.

The flights actually were both pretty smooth, which was nice.

When we landed, we still had a two–hour drive to the resort.  The driver was super nice, so it went by quickly.  The ride was worth it, however. The resort, located in Ocho Rios, was right on the beach, warm and inviting. We even received a complimentary upgrade to a ocean–view room with a private balcony!

Oh and this is the front view of the resort. No big.

The only complaint I heard from other resort–goers was the size of the beach.  Many thought it was too small.  I personally didn’t mind, I know that there are a lot of resorts in the area and it must be hard to get beachfront space.  The only wierd thing was the gate on one end of the beach to keep locals off.  Looked kinda sinister.

The service was friendly, the staff went out of their way to help, (the resort was small enough that you could get to know the staff pretty easily and quickly) the rooms were clean and freshly maintained everyday. Overall I would give the resort four stars.

Alcohol at Jewel Dunn’s flows, and I was surprised with the variety of liquors they had.  I was not impressed with the wine selection, but I can get over it.  They had some great frozen drinks that we drank on the beach.

Since we sat on the beach all day, we sampled a whole bunch of drinks.

Things got silly on the beach pretty fast.

The weather wasn’t in as high spirits as we were, however.  Unfortunately, we had a lot of overcast weather, but we were able to get some sun on a couple of days.  I got a nice tan.  The Russian was not as lucky.  He is still peeling from the immense burn he got for laying in the sun without sunscreen.  In his defense, however, he did fall asleep and the sun did come out very suddenly.

The food at the resort was strictly alright. As a self–proclaimed foodie I guess I am judgmental of food, but I can honestly say had ups and downs.  The resort had a variety of restaurants, my favorite was the one with upscale Caribbean food and the Italian place and the burger stand.  I had a wonderful steak at the upscale Caribbean, I had chicken liver pasta at Italian, and the burger and wrap stand was open all night, so we could grab food whenever and sold awesome jerk chicken wraps.

Also, at the pizza place, I saw something that made me giggle:

Really?
Really?

The resort also did a beach party one night with dinner on the beach.  It was so fun, and they served some of the best food I had down there.

Jerk Chicken, ribs, fish, rice and corn. Jamaican comfort food at its best

I will be back in the Caribbean, hopefully very soon. In the meantime, back to my awesome food travels in Boston!
